Birchmeier Sprayer Maintenance Part 2

Birchmeier Sprayer Maintenance Part 2

Posted by Andrew Greess on Mar 21, 2022

Birchmeier backpack sprayers make up some of the best manual equipment on the market, and they are designed for years of reliable operation with proper maintenance. Maintenance is actually one of the most important things you should do with your Birchmeier sprayer.

Below is part 2 of in a series discussing the importance of maintaining your Birchmeier sprayer.

Replacing the Air Chamber on a Birchmeier Backpack

Andrew Greess, at Qspray.com, knows a thing or two about Birchmeier Backpack sprayers and all their parts. Not only does QSpray sell the products and parts, but they repair them as well. A part that sometimes wears down and cracks is the air cylinder. It is understandable as an extreme amount of pressure gets put into this piece, repeatedly.

Occasionally, with time and pressure, it cracks at the seam and needs to be replaced. Easily diagnosed as you'll hear air hissing from said crack. Visit Qspray.com to order all your Birchmeier Backpack sprayer parts.

Clean Out Your Birchmeier Backpack for Longer Life, Less Downtime

Birchmeier backpacks are great tools for pest & weed control professionals. Like most things they require a little care. One of the simplest things you can do to reduce problems is to clean out your Birchmeier Backpack sprayer.

These photos are a great example of why this is important:

photos of Birchmeier tank

The first photo shows chemical residue in the Birchmeier tank. Eventually the residue can find its way into the sprayer.

The 2nd photo shows chemical debris in the check valve. I promise you, if you have this much crap in your Birchmeier check valve, your sprayer will not pump up properly. If you keep pumping, you may cause significant damage.

The 3rd photo, shows gunk which found its way into the Birchmeier spray handle. There is no way that problems don't occur. Think about how little debris is necessary to clog your Birchmeier tip.

Birchmeier Backpack Sprayers - Even the Best Require Service

Birchmeier backpacks are the best backpack sprayers on the market. Just because you buy a quality piece of equipment, doesn't mean you can ignore service and maintenance. You have heard me say that Birchmeier backpack sprayers, like all spray equipment, can be long-lasting if you follow a few simple rules:

Flox

- Clean it out

- Don't overpressurize it

- Let the pressure off after each use

- Perform preventative maintenance.

Birchmeier Backpack Sprayer - Clean Those Filters

It is important to ensure a long life for your Birchmeier backpack sprayer. The best way to do this is to check and clean your filters every day.

On every Birchmeier there are two filters. One filter is in the tank. The other is in the spray valve (the handle as you might call it). If these filters get clogged, they will not perform at the level needed or they may not spray at all. This could cause you precious time and money.

Crazy Things We See in Equipment Repairs

At QSpray we not only build and sell pest and lawn control spray equipment, but we service it too. All kinds of repairs come in to our shop from the standard clean and tune ups, to cases like this melted Birchmeier Backpack sprayer. Expensive and time-consuming accidents like these can be prevented with simple checks to ensure proper care and storage of equipment.

In this instance, the technician left the backpack sprayer right behind the exhaust of the power sprayer engine. As you can imagine, and see, the exhaust was hot and melted the plastic of the sprayer. The chemical product leaked out, all over the back of the tech's truck and he had to come over to our offices, purchase a new sprayer and then go back to the job. It was an expensive lesson for one that you can learn from too. Be sure where you are placing your equipment in safe and secure locations, where they won't spill, get damaged/dented or melt!

Birchmeier Backpacks - This Problem is Avoidable

Pest control technician brought his Birchmeier Backpack Sprayer in for service. The steel pumping handle had snapped off. He said the Birchmeier Sprayers was only a few months old and asked if the pump handled was under warranty.

Birchmeier backpacks have a great 2-year warranty, but this situation was not covered. A quick check of the backpack, revealed the problem. The tech had not been greasing his backpack. The Birchmeier has a grease reservoir and a half turn of the grease piston applies grease to the pump mechanism.

Because he had not been applying grease, and because he was forcing the pump handle, he snapped it off. This problem, and the associated downtime and repair expense), could have been easily avoided had the technician properly cared for his equipment.

Often when techs don't grease their Birchmeiers the stainless steel frame snaps where it attaches to the plastic tank.
